Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo assures youths that the future is bright for Nigeria
Acting President Yemi Osinbajo has re-assured the youths of Nigeria that nothing can stop Nigeria from becoming a great nation with the support of Nigerians.
This he said in his speech read at the inauguration of the 2017 Batch ‘A’ youth corps members at the NYSC Orientation Camp, Ede, in Osun State, on Thursday.
Osinbajo’s speech was read by the acting Chairman, Osun State Governing Board, NYSC, Dr Isaac Aluko.
The acting President urged the youths to join in the fight against corruption and other vices which had damaged the reputation of the country, especially outside.
He said, “As you step into your roles as service members, I recommend to you the recently launched programme of the Federal Government, ‘Change begins with me’.
This campaign is aimed at restoring national values and upholding all that is right through each and every one of us.
“You must all strive to fight the painful erosion of our social values as a result of greed and dishonesty. If change begins with each of you, there can be nothing that will impede the progress of this great nation.”
The Osun State Government said at the ceremony that the current administration had commenced the process of paying the allowances of corps members, who served in the state from 2014 to 2016.
Aluko said the state government, under the leadership of Governor Rauf Aregbesola, placed priority on the welfare of the corps members, while assuring the corps members at the camp that the state would take care of them.
He said, “Let me tell you gentlemen corps members that the state government is working towards ensuring quality welfare packages for corps participants deployed in the state.
“You may have heard that the government has compiled the list of corps members, who served in the state from 2014 Batch C to 2016 Batch A, with the sole intention of paying their outstanding allowances. That tells you that Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola is indeed a father and also a man of his words.”
The Coordinator of the NYSC in the state, Mr Emmanuel Attah, urged the corps members to pay attention to the orientation programmes, saying the programmes would make the ‘corpers’ self-reliant and useful members of the society even after the service year.
The NYSC coordinator also warned corps members against cultism and drugs, saying anyone caught would be dealt with according to the provisions of the law.
In Kano, the Deputy Governor, Prof Abubakar Hafiz, who represented Governor Abubakar Ganduje, at the inauguration of 2017 Batch ‘A’ corps members on Thursday in Karaye, urged them to regard wherever they were posted to serve as their home.
Earlier, the Kano State NYSC Coordinator, Alhaji Ladan Baba, said the orientation course started three days ago and that as of the close of registration at 12 midnight on Wednesday, a total of 2,382 corps members were registered, comprising 1,070 males and 1,312 females.
Meanwhile, the Rivers State Government says it has approved funds to resuscitate the payment of monthly allowances to the members of the National Youth Service Corps serving in the state.
The state Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike, disclosed this on Thursday at the Permanent Camp of the NYSC in Tai Local Government Area during the inauguration of 2,439 members of the Batch ‘A’, Stream 1 of the scheme.
Wike noted that the state government had approved the funds requested by the management of the NYSC to sustain the scheme in the state.
Represented at the event by the Secretary to the State Government, Mr Kenneth Kobani, the governor explained that government was interested in the welfare of the corps members serving in the state.
Kobani said, “Most of the things requested have been approved by Chief Nyesom Wike, the governor of the state. What we expect from you is to remain loyal and dedicated to service to motivate the governor to quickly release the funds.”
Earlier in his welcome address, the NYSC Coordinator in the state, Mr Omotayo Adewoyee, listed the areas where the corps members would need the assistance of the state government.
Also, corps members deployed in Borno State for their 2017 service year have begun their three-week orientation in Katsina, instead of Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.
The development followed the takeover of the Borno NYSC Camp by Internally Displaced Persons.
The 1,422 corps members would, however, return to Borno for their primary assignments after their orientation in Katsina.
The Borno State Governor, Kashim Shettima, who spoke at the inauguration, urged the corps members to see themselves as true agents of national unity and cohesion.
The governor revealed that the state government had reviewed upward the state monthly allowances to corps members to N10,000 from N1,000, adding that medical doctors would now receive N100,000 while nurses, lab scientists and pharmacists are paid N50,000 monthly.
